RE: Runner


About:
Your soul dwells somewhere in this dungeon - you must find (and reclaim) it! But.. you only have 10 seconds before a mysterious power stops your attempts! Can you find your soul before its too late? Run.. like your life depends on it (and it does!), and then do it all over again! An intense, metroidvania, knowledge-based, rogue-lite, time-attack game made for the "ULTRA! Beginners' Jam 2" courtesy of Steventus and the BruGameDev discord community - thank you all for organizing this! I am super grateful =)


How to play:
+ You have 10 seconds before death;
+ Slaying enemies and objects will buy you more time;
+ Final score is your total in-game time taken to beat the level (lower = better);
+ There may be bugs.. but these can only (seemingly) serve to your advantage..

Controls:
+ 'A' & 'D': move Left & Right;
+ 'W' or 'Space': jump;
+ 'Enter': Attack;
+ 'S': Crawl (unlockable); 
+ 'Left Shift': Toggle Walk/Run
+ 'Tab': Menu (hold).

*Only partial controller support for DualShock4:
+ 'Cross': Jump;

Known issues:
Unsurprisingly as this is my first time using Unity in earnest, the game is somewhat unoptimized (the backend screams..), and has a few issues. Here are the more prominent ones:

1. UI elements are static for 1080p resolutions, and is unplayable in other resolutions.
Solutions: recommend playing the game in full-screen
; FIXED!

2. Closing the game without clicking the in-game restart button may lead to missing ability containers on future runs.
Solution: reset the game twice (via in-game reset button) when coming back to the game after closure;

3. Moving rapidly back and forth while using transition points may lead to players getting stuck on the wrong side of the next map.
Solution: moving rapidly back and forth can undo this - or just restart the game via the menu (tab)
FIXED!

4. Crawling immediately upon unlocking the crawl ability, may cause horizontal movements to seize.
Solution: toggle walk/run (left shift) should reset player movement capabilities.

5. The menu may occasionally spawn without button highlights, hence without controller/keyboard control. 
Solution: press tab/L1 again and the highlights will return.

I loved your game. I found it challenging and intense, and despite some bugs issues, I finally managed to find the soul and score.
The game has a nice background story. The dungeon in particular was a fascinating experience and left me wanting more, the messages in each room in the game are great for motivation. I'm excited to see how you continue to improve the game in the future.

Also wow! That's quite a score - I didn't know that was possible =P Did you rack up the time so that you could explore at a calmer pace? That was certainly a strategy I wanted people to use, but I didn't know the timer could go that high! XD

Edit: Added extra comments - Unless the commas are part of the bugs you're referring to. Regardless though, that's an awesome score! XD

I didn't rack up points; I just went as fast as possible, as you suggested. However, after you mentioned a strategy to follow, I took your advice. I managed to defeat the same enemy multiple times using the transition technique (specifically, the left enemy on the stairs level), accumulating a significant amount of 10-second bonuses and achieving the best time of 219.46 seconds.
I also encountered some transition bugs during my gameplay. I'm unsure why, but there were instances when the menu restart function didn't work properly, forcing me to exit the page and reload the game. I even experienced a situation where an enemy was able to attack me because I was trapped between the floor and an outside area, limiting my movement to left and right. The crawl area had the most issues with transitions.
Although I appreciate the fluid movement of the main character, I find it a bit unrealistic that enemies don't immediately strike. The player has to approach them within a certain distance before they start attacking. I could literally position myself above them, and they wouldn't retaliate. However, I do enjoy the fact that most enemies are easy to defeat, with the exception of the final one who delivers a beating.
It would be a welcome addition to have health hearts placed in empty spaces if you decide to adjust the difficulty level, which is currently well-balanced for the surprise factor.

This game is intense! Good job! :D

Backtracking through the map with new abilities and the great choice of music gave me some real Castlevania vibes.

It took me several tries to get to the boss only for him to beat me down. After a few more tries I got 122.12s: 122.12s
